No assembly required, although the handle must be locked into position as it comes folded in half. To lock the shaft straight, the black loop handle slides down over the hinge joint (one-way fitment opposite direction of top handle). The measuring dial is easy to read, and you can simply hit the reset button whenever you want to start measuring from zero again. Give yourself a break whenever you need by putting down the kickstand that clips onto the lower shaft.
